ITES Activity 3 - Keith Barnett

I chose to analyze the Essential Standards for United States History Part 1 and the Common Core ELA Standards for 9-12.  As a general overview of my analysis, I found that ITES Secondary Standards 6.SI.1 and 6.TT.1 have the greatest logical correlations with both of these curriculums.  Standard 6.RP.1 can overlap at any point in either of these curriculums.  It will be up to the discretion of the teacher when planning appropriate grade level projects and/or utilizing technology tools as to when and to what degree ITES 6.RP.1 will be addressed.  ITES standard 6.SE.1 is again less specifically correlated to the History and ELA Common Core curriculums; however, these standards/strands will certainly be an important part of any technology use.  Teachers will have to teach and embed the Safety and Ethical Issues standards/strand into any assignment, classwork, assessment, multimedia presentation, etc that they utilize with their students.

Some specific examples of correlations I found are listed below.

ITES StandardUS History Essential StandardsELA 9-12 Common Core Standard
6.SI.1
Evaluate resources needed to solve a problem.AH1.H1.2 = Differentiate between historical facts and historical interpretations. Reading Standards for Literature 6 - 12 - 1.  Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining
where the text leaves matters uncertain.
AH1.H.1.4 = Obtain historical data from a variety of sourcesSpeaking and Listening Standards 6 -12 - 2.  Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse media or formats evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source
6.TT.1
Use technology and other resources for assigned tasks.AH1.H.1.4 = Support interpretations with historical evidenceWriting Standards 6-12 - 6.  Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products in response to ongoing feedback, including new arguments or information.

Speaking and Listening Standards 6 -12 - 2.  Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse media or formats evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source
6.RP.1
Design-project based products that address global problems. Writing Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects 6 -12 - 1.  Write an argument focused on discipline specific content.

6.SE.1
Analyze issues and practices of responsible behavior when using resources.           Must be integrated into all technology use.

  1. Hi, Keith!
Your analysis was so much more clear-cut and easier to read than my own. I like the way that you have organized the information in your post.

  2. Hi, Keith,
I appreciate your use of the word "embed" when speaking of the Safety and Ethical Issues standards. So many students seem to already have the opposite view embedded in their behavior that is really difficult to get them turned around. Do you have any specific strategies for getting them on board?

  3. Keith,
Your correlation of the ITES and Essential Standards is well written. What do you think would be the best way to teach teachers on implementing ITES in their curriculum?

  4. Keith,
I very much like the way you have used a T-Chart approach to compare social studies and ELA. Your approach makes logical sense and seems to me a great place for our PLC (or whatever name they have this year) to begin a discussion when it comes to developing lesson plans. What I would like to see is more of this approach used at the county level before posting exemplar unit plans. Thanks so much.
